SUMMARY

1. Anterior atlanto-occipital membrane: attaches from the upper border of the anterior arch of the atlas to the outer margin of the foramen magnum

2. Posterior atlanto-occipital membrane: attaches from the upper border of the posterior arch of the atlas to the outer margin of the foramen magnum. Deficient laterally to allow for the passage of the vertebral arteries and C1 nerve
