THYROID STORM
SUMMARY
1. Storms are precipitated in inadequately treated hyperthyroidism by surgery, infections, iodine load (amiodarone, contrast dye).
2. Symptoms: fever, psychosis/delirium, tachycardia, hypertension, CCF.
3. Other symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, jaundice.
4. Diagnosed with immeasurable TSH & markedly increased FT4.
5. Death from adrenal insufficiency (adrenals may be normal but work overtime) & cardiovascular collapse.
