SUMMARY

1. Necessary for gut absorption of calcium.

2. Recommended intake 400-800 IU/day.

3. Recommended serum vitamin D level at 50U/L.

4. Summer: when the UV Index is 3 or above, most people maintain adequate vitamin D levels just by spending a few minutes outdoors on most days of the week.

5. Late autumn & winter: when the UV Index falls below 3, spend time outdoors in the middle of the day with some skin uncovered.
