SUMMARY
1. The sulfonylureas and meglitinides increase insulin secretion.
2. Glipizide is a 2nd generation sulfonylurea.
3. Weight gain is a common side effect of sulfonylureas.
4. The half-life of these drugs is long, and hypoglycemia can persist in states of overdose or renal impairment.
5. Meglitinides: These drugs are rapid-acting with a very short half-life (repaglinide, nateglinide). Major effect is on postprandial glucose.
