SUMMARY

1. VCI includes a spectrum of diseases from mild cognitive impairment to vascular dementia.

2. Stroke tends to have greater impact on attention, executive function, cognitive slowing than memory (Cumming et al. 2013).

3. Etiology: cortical/subcortical infracts, small-vessel disease with white-matter lesions, lacunae and ICH.

4. Diffuse dysfunction results from underlying sub-clinical disease, such as white matter disease, or an accumulation of small infarcts in small-vessel disease (Pantoni 2010).

5. Higher load of white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) is strongly associated with dementia and cognitive decline (Dufouil et al. 2009).
