STROKE-RECURRENCE & MORTALITY
SUMMARY
1. Risk of another stroke within the first year: 12%-25%.
2. Overall mortality in the first year after stroke: 25%-40%.
3. Patients aged 45-64: 8%-12% of ischemic strokes & 37%-38% of hemorrhagic strokes die within 30 days (ARIC study, NHLBI).
4. Patients aged 65 and older: 12.6% of all strokes (8.1% of ischemic strokes, and 44.6% of hemorrhagic strokes) die within 1 month (Medicare Part B random sample).
5. Other risk factors for mortality: old age, severe stroke, brainstem involvement, hemorrhagic stroke, decreased consciousness, premorbid dependence (patient admitted from nursing home), DM, cardiac disease, delayed presentation.
