SEIZURES-STATUS EPILEPTICUS
SUMMARY
1. Status epilepticus is defined as a seizure lasting > 30 minutes or a series of 2 or more seizures without regaining consciousness in between. It is considered a medical emergency.
2. Usual causes in adults include stroke, alcohol or other drugs, stopping or changing seizure medications, hypoxia, CNS infection, metabolic causes, tumor, and trauma.
3. Triggers include alcohol, cocaine, intense emotions, strobe lighting, loud music, stress, menstruation, and lack of sleep.
