SUMMARY

1. MS is a chronic demyelinating disease of the CNS that begins between the ages of 20-30 yrs.

2. Women are affected more often than men (3:1); more common in temperate climates.

3. 4 types: (a) relapsing-remitting [RLRM] (b) secondary progressive (c) primary progressive (d) benign multiple sclerosis.

4. The relapsing-remitting type (initially normal but later on with residual deficit between spells) can transform into the progressive type.

5. 85% of cases are initially RLRM, after several years, transform to the progressive type.
