SUMMARY

1. The primary goal is the maintenance of function, independence & quality of life.

2. Prospective care: prevention & maintenance treatment for all patients (ALS, post-polio).

3. Expectant care: includes education & decision-making based on expected progress.

4. Track progress using the ALS Functional Scale Revised (ALS-FRS-R).

STAGES OF MANAGEMENT
5. Early stage: diagnosis, support services, vocation, driving, advanced care planning, referral to MND Association Australia/NZ.

6. Mid stage: manage worsening function, compensatory techniques.

7. Late stage: end of life care.
