SUMMARY

SUBCORTICAL DEMENTIAS
1. Heterogeneous group of disorders that share primary pathology in subcortical structure and a characteristic pattern of neuropsychologic impairment.

2. Characterized by: impaired problem-solving, personality changes (apathy, inertia, depression), slowed thought processes (bradyphrenia), frontal dysfunction (disinhibition, personality change).

3. Frontal signs result from a disconnection of the frontal cortex from the basal ganglia.

CORTICAL DEMENTIAS
4. Group of disorders due to cortical pathology.

5. Characterized by: memory & language deficits.
