SUMMARY

1. Prevention: good nursing care, review anaesthetic protocols, assess bowel & bladder, ensure good nutrition

2. Treat all precipitating causes

3. Communicate with patients and carers

4. Manage patient & carer distress and agitation

5. Prevent complications (such as falls, injuries, aspiration pneumonia)

6. Rehabilitation

7. Follow-up and assess for dementia
