1. Provoked PE, transient risk factors (such as surgery): 3 months
2. Permanent/persistent risk factors (such as cancer): indefinite
3. Unprovoked PE: 3-6 months
4. Submassive PE: 6-12 months
5. Massive PE: indefinite
