SECONDARY HYPERTENSION-SECONDARY HYPERALDOSTERONISM
SUMMARY
1. Caused by disease in the kidneys or a restricted blood flow in the renal arteries.
2. Decreased renal blood flow => increased renin => increased angiotensin II => increased aldosterone.
3. Characterised by hypertension, hypokalemia, metabolic alkalosis and increased serum renin.
4. Common causes: renovascular disease, can be due to either atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis or fibromuscular dysplasia.
