POSTERIOR TIBIAL ARTERY

SUMMARY


1. Arises from the popliteal artery at the lower border of the popliteus where is divides into its anterior and posterior tibial branches.
 2. It passes under the soleal arch to lie on the aponeurosis of the FDL, b/w the FDL (medially) and FHL (laterally).
3. It passes down the leg and ends under the flexor retinaculum by dividing into medial and lateral plantar arteries. 

BRANCHES
1. Tibial nutrient artery.
2. Peroneal artery - arises an inch below the commencement of the PTA and runs below the fibrous origin of the FHL. It passes down the leg and ends by divinding into a perforating branch & lateral calcaneal branch.
