SUMMARY

INSPIRATORY MUSCLES
1. Diaphragm: main respiratory muscle during quiet breathing (75% of volume change); contracts during inspiration and relaxes during expiration
2. External intercostals
3. Accessory muscles

EXPIRATORY MUSCLES
4. Internal intercostals
5. Abdominal muscles are primarily active during forceful expiration and coughing; they also help push the relaxed diaphragm toward the chest cavity
