SUMMARY


1. The ATA forms at the bifurcation of the popliteal a. in the calf and passes into the extensor compartment above the upper border of the interosseous membrane.
 2. The anterior tibial veins run on each side of the artery and anastamose by cross channels at frequent intervals. 
3. The artery with its companion veins runs vertically down on the interosseous membrane and cross the tibia in front of the ankle joint midway b/w the malleoli, where it changes its name to the dorsalis pedis artery. 
4. It gives off recurrent + malleolar branches. 
5. TA tendon lies on the medial side of the artery throughout, EDL & PERONEUS TERTIUS tendons lie on the lateral side of the artery throughout. 
6. EHL crosses in front of it.
