SUMMARY

1. People are generally born with a degree of insulin resistance which may change with obesity or other factors, but not much over an individual's lifetime.

2. What changes is that beta-cell function & production of insulin in response to insulin-resistance deteriorates over time.

3. Eventually this reaches a stage where glucose levels rise, leading to impaired glucose tolerance then overt diabetes.
