SUMMARY
1. GLUTEUS MEDIUS - arises from the gluteal surface of the ileum, between the middle and posterior gluteal lines. It is inserted into the upper lateral surface of the greater trochanter. A bursa separates the greater trochanter and its tendon.
2. GLUTEUS MINIMUS - arises from the gluteal surface of the ileum, b/w the middle and inferior gluteal lines; it is attached to the anterior surface of the greater trochanter.
3. Both muscles are supplied by the superior gluteal nerve. Both abduct + medially rotate the thigh at the hips.
4. Superior gluteal nerve - emerges from the greater sciatic notch above the piriformis and runs between the gluteus medius and minimus (supplying both).
5. Superior gluteal artery - emerges from the greater sciatic notch above the piriformis to give superficial and deep branches. The deep branch runs between the gluteus medius and minimus to divide further.
